UtiliData® Adaptive Voltage Control™ proves beneficial to
both end-users and electric utilities.
November 12, 2003 – PCS UtiliData announced results from a year-long test of its
Adaptive Voltage Control (AdaptiVolt™) system at Inland Power & Light Company in
Spokane, Washington. The results show outstanding energy conservation
performance.
In
response to a perceived need for technical solutions capable of minimizing the
social and economic impacts of both energy emergencies and rising energy prices,
PCS UtiliData undertook a three-year research and development (R&D) program.
This resulted in the initial operational deployment of product called
AdaptiVOlt™, a viable alternative to current energy conservation applications.
As a closed-loop feedback system, AdaptiVolt™ maintains end-of-line voltages
above minimum levels and within standards. Thanks to the voltage regulating
capabilities of AdaptiVolt™, customers can rely on adequate voltage levels at
their meters. AdaptiVolt™ saves energy by reducing the average voltage on the
entire distribution system; therefore, both the energy consumed and the energy
losses inherent in the distribution system are reduced.
Inland Power & Light Company became the first adapter of AdaptiVolt™. In the
process, they not only conserved energy, but also streamlined their operations
and clearly demonstrated that being pro-active pays off. Their customers
continue to benefit from lower electrical bills. The AdaptiVolt™ deployment at
Inland Power & Light Company was funded with the help of the Bonneville Power
Administration (BPA) under the Conservation Augmentation Program.
"A
thorough analysis of test data collected at the Halfmoon Substation between
November 2002 and November 2003 demonstrates that AdaptiVolt™ produces an
overall 4.1% energy use reduction. This equates to an estimated 1.9 million
kilowatt hour savings per year. The energy saved from this installation alone is
enough to power 180 average American homes for one year," said Mr. David G.
Bell, Senior Controls Engineer at PCS UtiliData. "And [with AdaptiVolt™] we can
do automated peak load shaving and Conservation Voltage Regulation (CVR)."
Inland Power & Light Company provides electricity to over 30,000 commercial,
residential and agricultural customers in eastern Washington and northern Idaho.
Providing electric service since 1937, Inland Power serves as the largest
electric cooperative in Washington State.
